Swat valley was named as Udayana, which stands for ancient epics. It was once the holy land of Buddhist learning, a place known for great Buddha pilgrimage. It is believed that Buddha once himself visited the valley and preached about peace and harmony. History depicts that Alexander has fought many battles in this area before he crossed the delta of River Indus. The valley was known for its brave warriors as well. It is believed that there were once 1400 monasteries in the region, which led to the formation of Gandahara School of sculpture. The language spoken in the valley is Pashto, with a minority of Torwali and Kalami speakers in the Swat Kohistan region of Upper Swat, but the majority can understand and speak Urdu.
At the end of the Mauryan period (324–185 BC), Buddhism spread in the whole Swat Valley, which became a very famous center of Buddhist religion. After a Buddhist phase the Hindu religion reasserted itself, so that at the time of the Muslim conquest (1000 AD) the population was solidly Hindu. Afterwards the Muslims hold control of the region. A significant majority of people today in swat are Muslims. The lower areas of Swat could be visited both in winters in summers to see multiple colors of Swat but if you wish to visit the northern or upper side the best time is between April to September. The weather in this period is not severely cold. The roads are safer. Its best recommended to visit the region in spring season.
