Swat

Swat District is a district in Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. Swat is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty. Swat's capital is Saidu Sharif, though the largest city, and main commercial centre, is the nearby city of Mingora. Swat is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Swat was home to Buddhism till 11th century. The valley was a peaceful piece of land until the game of power led to disruption of the valley and it was first conquered by Muhammad of Ghazni. Later Swat was conquered by the Yousafzais. During the reign of Akhhud Sahib Swat flourished due to agriculture and became one of the significant trading areas for business. In 1969 Swat became part of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.  Swat is a district in Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. Swat is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty. Swat is the 15th-largest district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The region is inhabited largely by Pashtuns except in the valley's uppermost reaches, where the Kohistani people dominate.

Swat valley was named as Udayana, which stands for ancient epics. It was once the holy land of Buddhist learning, a place known for great Buddha pilgrimage. It is believed that Buddha once himself visited the valley and preached about peace and harmony. History depicts that Alexander has fought many battles in this area before he crossed the delta of River Indus. The valley was known for its brave warriors as well. It is believed that there were once 1400 monasteries in the region, which led to the formation of Gandahara School of sculpture. The language spoken in the valley is Pashto, with a minority of Torwali and Kalami speakers in the Swat Kohistan region of Upper Swat, but the majority can understand and speak Urdu.

At the end of the Mauryan period (324–185 BC), Buddhism spread in the whole Swat Valley, which became a very famous center of Buddhist religion. After a Buddhist phase the Hindu religion reasserted itself, so that at the time of the Muslim conquest (1000 AD) the population was solidly Hindu. Afterwards the Muslims hold control of the region. A significant majority of people today in swat are Muslims. The lower areas of Swat could be visited both in winters in summers to see multiple colors of Swat but if you wish to visit the northern or upper side the best time is between April to September. The weather in this period is not severely cold. The roads are safer. Its best recommended to visit the region in spring season.
